A key destination for tourists and locals alike, John F. Kennedy Plaza — better known as LOVE Park, after its famous Robert Indiana sculpture — serves as a gateway to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Center City.

Originally constructed in 1965, the central plaza has long been in need of some love, care and 21st-century upgrades.

City planners agree, and now the redesign plan for LOVE Park has been decided.

Following an extensive redesign survey and civic engagement process to align public priorities and city goals, Hargreaves and Associates, along with KieranTimberlake, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy, have revealed the final design for the new LOVE Park — and it sure is lovely.

Aimed at making the super central civic space more accessible and usable, upgrades include adding green space, installing a new water feature, adding seating, creating concession areas, defining a food truck area, renovating the welcome center and opening up access to the park.

The LOVE statue will remain at the heart of the park — diagonal sight lines included — and the saucer-shaped visitor center will stay put, too, with some key enhancements.

With a few more signatures to obtain, PlanPhilly reports final, final approvals will come in the fall and then a timeline will be announced.

When LOVE Park reopens sometime 2017, though, the space sure will have seen some love.
