Fun fact: Philadelphia has more public pools per capita than any other city in the country.
Especially on days when the mercury hovers around 90 degrees, that’s information visitors and locals can use to cool off.
Last week, the first pool of The Pop-Up Pool Project debuted at the Francisville Playground in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia, and it’s now open daily just waiting for folks to jump on in.
An initiative of the Knight Cities Challenge, the community improvement-driven project was conceived by Benjamin Bryant, Director of Planning & Design at Group Melvin Design, and designed by Group Melvin and Sikora Wells Appel landscape architecture firm.
The idea is to refresh the atmosphere around an underutilized city pool with low-cost — yet high-design — elements to help it become a welcoming multi-purpose civic space.
This summer, the Francisville pool is now home to custom built-in seating and planters, moveable furniture, umbrellas and programming, all to serve as a trial to see what elements can work best to enhance the public pool-going experience moving forward. There’s even a place for any visitor to submit feedback.
The Francisville Playground pool is open daily through August 21, but open swim hours vary.
Check here for a complete schedule of pool hours, and note the weekday swim camp hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and weeknight “adult swim” hours Monday through Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. (when no one under 18 is allowed at the pool).
