Yes! Philadelphia Named America's First World Heritage City

Independence Hall

Huge news, Philadelphia! Philadelphia is the country’s first World Heritage City largely thanks to the global significance of UNESCO World Heritage site Independence Hall. (Photo by C. Smyth for Visit Philadelphia)

Fact: There are 266 World Heritage Cities around in the world, but not one in the United States until now.

As of today, Friday, November 6, the City of Philadelphia is the first World Heritage City in the entire United States.

The culminating step in a two-year initiative pursued by Mayor Michael Nutter and the City, the decision came down today via a vote at the 13th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities in Arequipa, Peru.

In 2013, Philadelphia became the first American city to be an approved observer member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities. This year, the World Heritage Philadelphia executive committee submitted an application to become a full member.

As the home of Independence Hall, an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, and the city where democracy was established to form the United States of America, Philadelphia’s qualifications to join the ranks of heritage cities needs little justification.

Today, the General Assembly of the OWHC's World Congress agreed, naming Philadelphia the first World Heritage City in the United States.

Now, Philadelphia takes its place alongside Paris, Rome, Cairo, Tel-Aviv, Quebec and the other global World Heritage Cities all cities that are home to sites included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and critical to world culture.

For information about the Organization of World Heritage Cities, check right here. www.ovpm.org.

With today’s designation, Philadelphia earns not only an amazing celebration of its part in world history, but also an impressive addition to its list of American firsts.

Eagles players are disappointed in themselves at 3-4…

The mistakes and missed connections on offense have been a little painful to watch for Eagles fans, but even the Eagles players are getting frustrated, too, and it shows in these quotes compiled after the loss to Carolina:

“It sucks, man,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “We had a chance. The defense got turnovers for us, 30 yards out and we gotta score touchdowns. We can’t settle for field goals. There are a bunch of times when that happened. You play good teams like Carolina and it’s going to cost you and it did [Sunday night]. You gotta score touchdowns.”

“I felt like we were really prepared coming in here with a great game plan,” center Jason Kelce said. “As long as we executed, I thought we would be fine. But we didn’t execute. The slow starts, mistakes. I don’t know what the reason is. We had mistakes across the board. Everybody takes turns. I shouldn’t be making mistakes at this point in my career. I should be on top of my stuff. It’s getting old real quick. We’ve got to put a whole game together for our defense. Our defense is going out there and doing a great job. We’ve got to put them in a better position.”

Here’s wide receiver Jordan Matthews regarding the strange rash of dropped passes, including the one that popped into the air and was intercepted:

“I can’t pinpoint one thing,” Matthews said. “There is no rhyme or reason to it. It’s new to me. I’ve never had this situation. I didn’t have a lot of drops last year. I didn’t have a lot in college. It’s just something I have to work through. Our team needs me to make plays, so it hurts me to come off the field knowing that I’ve left something on the field. I have no other solution other than to keep working at it.”

“We’ve got to do a better job catching the ball for Sam (Bradford),” TE Zach Ertz said. “He’s doing all he can out there. The protection isn’t perfect. The throws aren’t perfect, but we’ve got to do our job when the ball is in the air and as a receiving corps, we’re not doing that. We’re not helping our quarterback now.”

That’s the understatement of the week.

“The bye comes at a good time for us,” Ertz said. “We need to come back strong from the break and play our best football. I think we’re going to come back strong. It’s a lack of focus, I guess. I don’t know.”

“We have a long season ahead of us,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said, “but it’s on us. We have to win games. It’s right there for us. We have to find a way and we’re not doing that on a consistent basis right now. It’s everybody. Everybody is responsible for this.”

“I think we’ve shown flashes just about every game of moving the ball and doing things well and running the offense the way that we want to,” QB Sam Bradford said. “But then there are other times, whether it be a various assortment of self-inflicted wounds, we kill ourselves. It happens too often.”

“I think when we play the way we’re capable of then yes, we’re capable of beating anyone. But, we have got to eliminate the mental errors, the self-inflicted wounds. We’ve got to stop beating ourselves. I think if we can stop beating ourselves and not have to beat us and the other team, I think we’ll be alright.”

“A game like this, we knew it was going to be a battle. We knew it was going to come down to the fourth quarter,” Bradford said. “Obviously, if we could have converted a couple of those field goals into touchdowns, the game might be a little bit different.”

And a lot easier for we fans to watch, too!

Chip Kelly: “I go back to the drops and the penalties, (those) are the things we need to clean up if we want to be a successful football team,” he said. “We had a drive going and then we get a hold. We had a real good punt and have them pinned down inside the 20, and then we get an unnecessary (roughness) penalty on the punt. And you can’t do that against a good team like Carolina and expect to win.”

The Eagles also announced their Practice Squad signees:

RB Raheem Mostert
LB Deontae Skinner
OL Brett Boyko
TE Chris Pantale
CB Randall Evans
OL Malcolm Bunche
WR Quron Pratt
S Ed Reynolds
DE Brian Mihalik
WR Freddie Martino

The guy you don’t probably know much about is  Chris Pantale — Pantale is the only player on the practice squad who wasn’t previously a member of the Eagles. The 25-year-old tight end originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets in 2013. He dressed for five games with the Jets in 2014. Pantale played for Boston College, which is where current Eagles quarterback coach Ryan Day used to coach. Pantale most recently spent training camp with the Chicago Bears. He measures in at 6-5, 254 pounds.

Okay, at least Mostert passed through waivers. We’ve still got a chance to enjoy this kid’s development before some other team signs him away. .. We already lost that young TE project Eric Tomlinson to Houston, who snatched him away quickly upon waivers…

Now about this young QB prospect Stephen Morris…

Morris went undrafted out of the University of Miami in 2014 and spent the season on Jacksonville’s practice squad.

In the recent preseason for Jacksonville, the 23-year-old quarterback completed 23 of 42 passes (54.8 percent) with one touchdown for a 79.7 passer rating. The Jaguars released him Saturday when they opted to keep just two quarterbacks, starterBlake Bortles and veteran backup Chad Henne.

Morris was a two-year starter in college for the Hurricanes. He finished his college career with 49 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions. He passed for 3,028 yards his senior year.

As a true freshman at Miami in 2010, Morris appeared in six games with four starts. He finished the season completing 82 of 153 passes for 1,240 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a sophomore in 2011, he appeared in five games with one start. He completed 26 of 37 passes for 283 yards with two interceptions. As a junior in 2012, he entered the season as the starting quarterback and started all 12 of the Hurricanes games.  On September 29, 2012, in a game against NC State, he set the ACC record for passing yards in a game with 566.  He finished the season completing 245 of 421 passes for 3,345 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions. As a senior in 2013, he passed for 3,028 yards and 21 touchdowns. He finished his career with 7,896 yards with 49 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

He’s 6-2 and weighs 220 pounds.

Who is Jay Glazer and why should Eagles fans care?

Glazer1

Glazer2

Glazer3

Glazer4

Jay Glazer, now 46 years old, is an American senior writer for FoxSports.com and has been the NFL Insider for NFL on Fox since 2004. He is also a business partner with Randy Couture in MMAthletics based in Las Vegas, Nevada at Xtreme Couture Training Center. Glazer trains NFL players in Mixed Martial Arts at their Los Angeles location during the off-season. Glazer hosts UFC shows for FOX Sports, including weigh-ins and pre/post coverage.

Glazer began his writing career as a reporter at the New York Post in New York City. He worked his way up within the Post organization by developing access to players and agents. He also wrote articles for the Giants Newsweekly produced by longtime New York Giants correspondent Dave Klein. Among his first sources were NFL agent Jimmy Sexton’s New York representative Peter Flach. Through Flach he became friendly with New York Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn and New York Jets cornerback Aaron Glenn. Through Sehorn he also became close with current Hall of Fame Fox analyst and former Giant Michael Strahan. Through Strahan he became close with Fox Sports anchor Curt Menefee. UFC President Dana White has stated in multiple interviews that Glazer is one of the nicest people he’s ever met and he considers him a personal friend. Glazer has appeared in several Subway commercials with NASCAR driver Carl Edwards.

His acting appearances include:
The Game Plan (2007) as Hack Pack;
The Longest Yard (2005) as Sportswriter;
The League (2014) as Himself;
Ballers (2015) as Himself…

So what the heck does this guy have to do with the current Philadelphia Eagles roster?

If you’ve been following Tommy Lawlor at IgglesBlitz.com you would know…

Robert Klemko wrote a terrific piece for MMQB on Jay Glazer and the offseason training he does with NFL players, including Lane Johnson, Zach Ertz, DeMarco Murray and John Moffit.

“A typical day at Unbreakable consists of an unorthodox hip-focused stretching session with David Honorel (inspired, he says, by the movements of bears, crocodiles, frogs and gorillas), speed training with Liggin, weight training with an emphasis on safety, MMA work including boxing, wrestling and hand fighting with Glazer, Evans, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner John Lewis and former UFC stars Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture. Glazer co-owns the gym with Brian Urlacher and Lindsey Berg, an Olympic volleyball player who now plays professionally overseas. Their faces are painted on a gym wall with the word “Unbreakable”, but it’s Glazer who runs the show, transforming fighting drills into football drills.”

“John Moffitt, the former Denver Broncos guard and now potential Eagles starter, came to Glazer after a nearly two-year hiatus from the sport during which he admits to letting his body go to a degree. He weighed 283 pounds, down from his playing weight of 320, and had the biggest gut of his life. The initial sessions were exhausting. Today he’s back above 300 pounds and slimmer than he was at 283.

“You keep hearing him say, ‘neutral face’ or ‘get your hands off your hips,’ ” Moffitt says of Glazer. “It’s very annoying when you first start that, but after a while it makes you stronger. It makes you used to being tired and used to being in pain and you don’t fight it anymore so it makes you more resilient. It just stacks on itself, on itself, on itself, to where you become a stronger individual.”

“Glazer’s training can have a major impact on the Eagles.

BGN compiled some terrific Tweets from Glazer on Moffit:

“I have never been so proud of a guy I’ve trained than I am of John Moffitt. Retired two years ago because he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back! Guy inspires us every day. He came to me 3 months ago @unbreakable to train to take his career back. He’s become the favorite of every player in our gym. He officially un-retired today. Free agent starting guard. So proud of him to get here.”

“Amazing how this guy took his life back. He’s taught us in the gym a bunch about beating your demons.”

“In these past months Moffitt has been training with us we’ve also had guys like Steve Hutchinson, Shaun O’Hara & Jackie Slater come work with him.”

“Re: Moffitt, anyone who COMMITS to improving & righting his wrongs should be applauded. Life is about overcoming & improving. So proud of him.”

“Getting a little misty. Today we sent John Moffitt off to Philly. Three months of complete dedication. He showed us bad decisions CAN be overcome by better ones.”

Well how you liking dem apples?

By the way, this is the guy who has been helping to convert Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson’s extra body fat into muscle over the past five months.  I would say the proof is in the pudding… but there is no more pudding left in Johnson’s physique.

I sent this to George Takei Dear George: This is a photo of Scott Walker’s new RV. I must say, all I can see is an equal sign with those two red bars on the right. And when I see a red equal sign I am reminded of the red equal sign which you encouraged more »

Appeal of John Doe decision to SCOTUS unlikely according to Hasen

This is from Hasen’s “Analysis of Wisconsin John Doe Ruling: Bad News for Campaign Finance Laws” U.S. Supreme Court review? The dissent notes that under the U.S. Supreme Court’s Caperton decision, the failure to recuse in this case could be a due process violation. At least theoretically, that’s an issue which could go to the more »

Dining critic on Helm: ‘One of the best pastas I’ve had in 2015’

My wife looked on in horror as she stared across the table at my transformation into a figure that, in retrospect, must have resembled a ravenous Mr. Burns, or perhaps a breeching dolphin. I’d just taken my first bite of the midcourse at Helm—a homemade ravioli filled with sweet,...

The Oval

Get excited, Philly: The Oval opens for its summer season this Wednesday, July 15.

With the grand opening comes the return of all the awesome aspects of the seasonal park — beer garden, food trucks, movie nights, etc. — with the addition of cool attractions like a disc-golf course and a brand-new art installation.

Located right in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at Eakins Oval, The Oval takes over the top of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for five days a week until Sunday, August 23.

Over the next six weeks, the pop-up park will be the go-to spot for outdoor fun for folks of all ages. Click here for the full schedule of programming.

Read on for our guide to The Oval’s 2015 season.

ART INSTALLATION AND LAYOUT

The Oval is conveniently located within walking distance of major attractions in the city like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences, the Free Library, the Rodin Museum and Sister Cities Park.

An eight-acre open-air urban oasis, The Oval is situated in what was once a surface lot in front of the Museum of Art. The pop-up park will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The centerpiece of The Oval will be Summer Kaleidoscope an art installation by Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, a Baltimore-based duo who creates large-scale, colorful pieces that often break the rules of traditional murals by spilling onto the ground and surrounding area. Summer Kaleidoscope is a 25,000-square-foot mural that is presented with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

BEER GARDEN AND FOOD TRUCKS

Yes, beer-garden lovers: The Oval’s tree-shaded beer garden returns for the summer of 2015. Wednesday through Saturday evenings during The Oval season, the beer garden will return with alfresco brews under a lush canopy of trees.

To kick off each weekend, the Visit Philly Beer Garden Series will call The Oval home on all Friday nights of its season, from July 17 through August 21. On Saturday nights, the beer garden will welcome Johnny Goodtime’s for evening quizzo.

Take note: The beer garden will be closed on Sundays.

Guests of The Oval can turn to a rotating roster of food trucks for fuel during outdoor fun at the pop-up park. Some of the city’s favorite food trucks like Local 215, The Tot Cart, Delicia’s, Cupcake Carnivale, Farm Truck, Little Baby’s Ice Cream and more will serve food to Oval guests this summer. Beyond regular programming, the food trucks will return for a special event on July 18 and 19, when winners of the Vendy Awards, a food truck competition, will park at The Oval for a full weekend of good eats.
