Philadelphia Breaks Ground On Viaduct Rail Park

For years, plans have been progressing to turn the Reading Viaduct into Viaduct Rail Park, an elevated park in the Callowhill neighborhood.

The Viaduct Rail Park, Philadelphia's answer to New York's High Line, is a highly anticipated project that has been in the works for years.

Fast Facts

• The City of Philadelphia, Center City District and the Friends of Rail Park broke ground today on the first portion of Rail Park.


• The development project will bring a quarter-mile park to an elevated rail line in the Callowhill neighborhood.


• Construction has started on phase one of the development of the Viaduct Rail Park; estimated completion is early 2018.


• Once complete, the park promises plenty of grassy space, swinging benches, lighting, walking paths and more.

The project will green a quarter-mile section of the unused rail line from Broad Street southeast across 13th and 12th Streets to Callowhill Street.

Today marks a major day for Viaduct Rail Park's progress -  Philadelphia broke ground on phase one of the project.

The Viaduct Rail Park project will turn a quarter-mile section of inoperational train tracks into a sprawling elevated park.

Upon completion, the quarter-mile space will be transformed into a verdant park complete with walking paths, lighting, seating, beautiful landscaping and swinging benches. Phase one of the project encompasses the area from Broad Street to the 1300 block of Noble Street, the bridges in that immediate area and 12th and 13th streets to Callowhill Street.

Phase one is expected to be completed in early 2018. Stay tuned for more on this exciting piece of development news!

Rock The Vote, a 25-year-old nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging and driving the under-30 voter population, launches its Truth to Power campaign here in Philadelphia this week.

Truth To Power Series Fast Facts

Overview

Gearing up for the 2016 general election and paralleling the DNC, Rock The Vote launches its Truth to Power campaign in Philadelphia this week.

Not new to the political sphere, Rock The Vote is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to increasing young voter participation for the past 25 years. 

This year, the organization is targeting Millennials, using its newest campaign to drive a mission of registering an additional 2 million voters under the age of 30 by November.

Truth to Power features three packed days of panels and performances by notable artists, musicians and politicians. The events are bookended on each side with free opening and closing concerts to take place Monday and Wednesday evening.

Throughout the entirety of the event series, a large-scale art exhibition will remain open to the public, featuring over 200 pieces of evocative and empowering works of art.

Works by Banksy and Shepard Fairey will make an appearance in the exhibition and a six-story Keith Haring banner is currently displayed on the outside of the event space at 990 Spring Garden Street.

Visitors can come view the art, for free, from 11 a.m. to midnight on Monday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Panel discussions are set to address everything from gun violence to reproductive rights to the nation's minimum wage, with conversations led by individuals such Senator Cory Booker and Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Jose Antonio Varga.

Exhibition and Event Highlights

Over 25 hours of panel discussions and conversations with notable policymakers, artists, youth activists, community leaders, young elected officials, journalists, spoken word poets and performers will unfold throughout the Truth to Power event series. The scheduled events kick off at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, running until6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each day.

Tonight, an opening night gallery concert will takeover the event space, featuring Philadelphia rapper Freeway, Andra Day, DJ Aktive and Jabair and Andre Power from the Soulection sound collective. The free but ticketed concert will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight. Those who wish to attend must RSVP, here.

On Tuesday, Senator Cory Booker opens the day of panel discussions with a conversation centered on criminal justice reform. Other experts in the field will come to weigh in on the topic, too, and answer questions from the audience.

A discussion on minimum wage follows the first Tuesday panel, and later in the day, Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams, among other politicians, will discuss the role that prosecutors play in transforming criminal justice.

Interjecting a bit of comedy into the event series, a morning Wednesday performance called “Laugh with your Conscience” by the Lady Parts Justice League will dive into subjects including sex, reproductive justice, gender equality and more. Wednesday night closes out with a panel on a topic that resonates with many young voters, student debt and how to end its growing impact.

On the surface it is a pretty dull hire… of course it can't be declared official until after the playoffs and/or the Super Bowl are completed due to the fact that Doug Pederson is still calling the offense for the Kansas City Chieves…

But obviously Doug Pederson buys into the guidelines set up by owner Jeff Lurie and pseudo-GM Howie Roseman…and the Philly Power Dudes buy into Pederson as the ultimate company guy.

So the Philadelphia Eagles are going to go from radical Kelly lime-green to conservative Andy Reid WCO-tinged midnight green…

That's the "dull" part of the equation— many critics of the impending hire of Pederson are calling it a backwards move.  Living in the past is what some are saying…

I don't know. Who am I to say "comfort food" doesn't have its place?

The main consideration is Pederson is obviously okay with whatever the frickin' role Howie Roseman plays in this organization. Does Howie have compromising photos of Mr. Lurie and Christine? Just kidding there, but I am growing impatient with the fact that we have a CPA/attorney who never suited up on a football field actually calling shots that determine who comes here or not.

No doubt in my mind that the reason the Eagles never bothered to interview Hue Jackson is that Hue said "FU" to the Howie factor…

Howie is a nice guy in person but he is a control mole…of the burrowing species.

Even Father Tom Coughlin got a whiff of Howie the Mole and said no need for a second interview… the padre recognized the smell of the devil.

Pederson is a "safe" hire— but he sure as hell better bring in a defensive mindset to offset the ultimate struggles of a conventional WCO which will stall out in transition.  At least we will be going 3-and-out in 3 minutes instead of 45 seconds…

Here's Phil Sheridan's (ESPN.com) rare positive counterpoints:

"Pederson has some things in his favor. As a backup quarterback, he studied under Reid, Holmgren and a pretty successful guy named Don Shula."

"His role in Philadelphia in 1999 was to make sure Reid's offense ran right while McNabb was learning it. Pederson made sure the other 10 offensive players lined up right and knew their assignments. He was literally serving as a coach on the field."

"In the years since, he has gotten more hands-on coaching experience. He coached Michael Vick, Vince Young and Nick Foles with the Eagles. He has served as offensive coordinator in Kansas City, helping Alex Smith to play the best football of his career."

"The challenge in Philadelphia will be different. Reid knew he wanted to draft a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in 1999. He chose McNabb over Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown. It was a decision that carried the Eagles to five NFC title games by 2009."

"Pederson would inherit a team with Mark Sanchez under contract and Sam Bradford waiting to find out whether he will become an unrestricted free agent in March. Bradford said he would base his own decision on whom the Eagles hired as head coach and what kind of offense they planned to run."

"Pederson can sell Bradford on an offense similar to the one Bradford ran successfully as a rookie in St. Louis in 2010. There's a chance that Pederson will retain offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, another Reid acolyte who was the Rams' coordinator when Bradford got there."

Any way you look at it, Mr. Lurie has obviously rethought the big picture and wants to go back to the way things used to be.  In truth, the players will probably love it. No more full-tilt practices the day before a game…and getting back to those blessed off-days on Tuesday… methinks Cary Williams was trying to tell us all about this two years ago…

But practice mechanics aside, you still have to draft smart and coach right. You have got to surround yourself with smart assistants. That building process is just as important as being a go-with-the-flow kinda guy as it relates to getting along with Howie and Jeff. Get-along guys fail just as quickly as in-your-face guys.

I hope Doug Pederson finds his own voice within this franchise as quickly as possible. I don't like the current perception that he is merely Jeff's and Howie's boy…

Yes! Philadelphia Named America's First World Heritage City

Fact: There are 266 World Heritage Cities around in the world, but not one in the United States until now.

As of today, Friday, November 6, the City of Philadelphia is the first World Heritage City in the entire United States.

The culminating step in a two-year initiative pursued by Mayor Michael Nutter and the City, the decision came down today via a vote at the 13th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities in Arequipa, Peru.

In 2013, Philadelphia became the first American city to be an approved observer member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities. This year, the World Heritage Philadelphia executive committee submitted an application to become a full member.

As the home of Independence Hall, an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, and the city where democracy was established to form the United States of America, Philadelphia’s qualifications to join the ranks of heritage cities needs little justification.

Today, the General Assembly of the OWHC's World Congress agreed, naming Philadelphia the first World Heritage City in the United States.

Now, Philadelphia takes its place alongside Paris, Rome, Cairo, Tel-Aviv, Quebec and the other global World Heritage Cities all cities that are home to sites included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and critical to world culture.

With today’s designation, Philadelphia earns not only an amazing celebration of its part in world history, but also an impressive addition to its list of American firsts.

The mistakes and missed connections on offense have been a little painful to watch for Eagles fans, but even the Eagles players are getting frustrated, too, and it shows in these quotes compiled after the loss to Carolina:

“It sucks, man,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “We had a chance. The defense got turnovers for us, 30 yards out and we gotta score touchdowns. We can’t settle for field goals. There are a bunch of times when that happened. You play good teams like Carolina and it’s going to cost you and it did [Sunday night]. You gotta score touchdowns.”

“I felt like we were really prepared coming in here with a great game plan,” center Jason Kelce said. “As long as we executed, I thought we would be fine. But we didn’t execute. The slow starts, mistakes. I don’t know what the reason is. We had mistakes across the board. Everybody takes turns. I shouldn’t be making mistakes at this point in my career. I should be on top of my stuff. It’s getting old real quick. We’ve got to put a whole game together for our defense. Our defense is going out there and doing a great job. We’ve got to put them in a better position.”

Here’s wide receiver Jordan Matthews regarding the strange rash of dropped passes, including the one that popped into the air and was intercepted:

“I can’t pinpoint one thing,” Matthews said. “There is no rhyme or reason to it. It’s new to me. I’ve never had this situation. I didn’t have a lot of drops last year. I didn’t have a lot in college. It’s just something I have to work through. Our team needs me to make plays, so it hurts me to come off the field knowing that I’ve left something on the field. I have no other solution other than to keep working at it.”

“We’ve got to do a better job catching the ball for Sam (Bradford),” TE Zach Ertz said. “He’s doing all he can out there. The protection isn’t perfect. The throws aren’t perfect, but we’ve got to do our job when the ball is in the air and as a receiving corps, we’re not doing that. We’re not helping our quarterback now.”

That’s the understatement of the week.

“The bye comes at a good time for us,” Ertz said. “We need to come back strong from the break and play our best football. I think we’re going to come back strong. It’s a lack of focus, I guess. I don’t know.”

“We have a long season ahead of us,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said, “but it’s on us. We have to win games. It’s right there for us. We have to find a way and we’re not doing that on a consistent basis right now. It’s everybody. Everybody is responsible for this.”

“I think we’ve shown flashes just about every game of moving the ball and doing things well and running the offense the way that we want to,” QB Sam Bradford said. “But then there are other times, whether it be a various assortment of self-inflicted wounds, we kill ourselves. It happens too often.”

“I think when we play the way we’re capable of then yes, we’re capable of beating anyone. But, we have got to eliminate the mental errors, the self-inflicted wounds. We’ve got to stop beating ourselves. I think if we can stop beating ourselves and not have to beat us and the other team, I think we’ll be alright.”

“A game like this, we knew it was going to be a battle. We knew it was going to come down to the fourth quarter,” Bradford said. “Obviously, if we could have converted a couple of those field goals into touchdowns, the game might be a little bit different.”

And a lot easier for we fans to watch, too!

Chip Kelly: “I go back to the drops and the penalties, (those) are the things we need to clean up if we want to be a successful football team,” he said. “We had a drive going and then we get a hold. We had a real good punt and have them pinned down inside the 20, and then we get an unnecessary (roughness) penalty on the punt. And you can’t do that against a good team like Carolina and expect to win.”
